Tides, Currents, and Waves
"Tides are the periodic rise and fall of the water level in the oceans and other large bodies of water." Tides are mainly controlled by the moon's gravity. When part of the ocean is directly facing the moon high tides occur on that side and the opposite. When high tides occur, low tide occurs in areas in between the high tide. There are two other types of tides the spring tide and the neap tide. "Spring tides are tides with the largest daily tidal range and occur during the new and full moons." "Neap tides are tides with the smallest daily tidal range and occur during the first and third quarter of the moon."
"Ocean currents are a movement of ocean water that follow a regular pattern." Currents are affected by weather Earth's rotation weather and where the continents are. There are two main types of currents surface currents and deep currents. Surface currents are currents that are made by wind at or near the ocean's surface. Deep currents are currents that are deep below the surface. Deep currents are not controlled by wind but by water density. The density is affected by salinity and temperature. Current also effect climate due to there being both warm and cold currents. Warm currents are what heat a place that would usually be colder. Cold currents also have the same effect on climate as warm water currents have on climate. Cold water currents cool down areas that would normally be much warmer.
Waves are made of their crest and their trough. The crest is the highest point of a wave. The trough is the lowest point of the wave. Most waves are made by wind blowing on to surface water. There are four types of waves at the shore, deep water waves, which are waves that have more than half of the depth that they do length, shallow water waves, which have a depth of less than half their wave length, breakers, waves that begin to tumble down or break, and surf, which isthe area between the breaker zone and the shore.
